Fashion in Motion

Fashion in Motion is a series of live catwalk events presented at the V&A. Featuring some of the greatest designers of our time, Fashion in Motion brings catwalk couture to a wider audience by modelling it against the beautiful backdrop of the Museum.

Fashion in Motion: Christopher Raeburn

Fashion in Motion: KENZO

The KENZO Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 12 November 2010, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Parisian fashion house. Renowned for its colourful hues and lively prints, KENZO surged to fame under the auspices of founder Kenzo Takada in the 1970s. The appointment of Italian designer Antonio Marras heralded a second coming for the label and saw a continuation of the signature poetic, striking and rich creations.

The Giles Deacon Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on July 17 2009. Giles Deacon graduated from Central Saint Martins and worked with Jean Charles de Castelbajac in Paris and Bottega Veneta and Gucci, in Milan, before launching his eponymous label 'Giles' in 2004. His debut received instant international acclaim and brought a renewed focus to London fashion.

The Stephen Jones Millinery in Motion live catwalk event took place on April 3 2009. Tying in with the V&A’s exhibition 'Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones', Fashion In Motion presented the work of world famous hat designer Stephen Jones, alongside five of London's the most exciting new milliners.

The Roksanda Ilincic Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on November 21 2008. Roksanda Ilincic is one of London's most successful young designers. Her show took the form of five vignettes specially created for the V&A and featured a selection of key pieces from her past three collections.

The Ma Ke Wuyong Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on May 16 2008. Ma Ke is one of the most prolific fashion designers working in China today, she graduated from the Suzhou Institute of Silk Textile Technology in 1992 and four years later set up her own label Exception de Mixmind.

The Manish Arora Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on September 7 2007. Manish Arora is known for his vivid palette of riotous colours and kitsch motifs. His garments combine contemporary silhouettes with a range of traditional Indian craft methods including embroidery, appliqué and beading.

The Gareth Pugh Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on June 15 2007. Producing immaculately made garments constructed in a theatrical and humorous style, using a variety of materials, including inflated PVC, Perspex and latex, Gareth Pugh challenges set attitudes towards clothing and design.

The Christian Lacroix Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on October 31 2006. Lacroix, well known for defining the look of the 1980s, combining bright colours and extravagant embellishment, has also designed costumes for numerous stage productions. His passion for theatre, opera, and art have provided inspiration for many of his collections.

The Anne Valérie Hash Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on May 27 2005. Anne Valérie Hash is one of the few women who designs for women. Her unique style is based on the deconstruction of menswear into impeccably cut womenswear. Its inspiration can be found in Coco Chanel, who borrowed from men’s wardrobes to dress the modern woman of the 1920s, and Madeleine Vionnet, who draped her designs directly onto a reduced mannequin.

The Vivienne Westwood Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on Friday 30 April 2004. Vivienne Westwood is one of the most iconic fashion designers of the last 30 years. Fashion's most famous rebel has become a major influence on global design, and this event accompanied the V&A's retrospective celebrating her career.

Fashion in Motion: Iranian Night

The Iranian Night Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 30 January 2004. The V&A and the Iran Heritage Foundation presented the works of contemporary Iranian fashion designers Massoud Ansari, Shirin Guild, Maryam Mahdavi, Shadi Parand and Laya Torkaman, from both inside and outside Iran in a special Fashion in Motion.

The Missoni Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 28 November 2003. Throughout its five decades in the fashion world, Missoni has come to symbolise chic knitwear with soft, comfortable ‘put together’ shapes that create an unmistakable image. Their knitwear creations are instantly recognisable by their distinctive rainbow stripes and zigzags.

The Jean Paul Gaultier Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 30 May 2003. Famous for his skirts for men and recreating underwear as outerwear, Gaultier’s clothes transcend the traditional boundaries of gender and fashion. This event was a unique opportunity to experience his first ever retrospective.

Fashion in Motion: Kataryna Szczortarska

The Katarzyna Szczotarska Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place in November 2002. This event showcased the recent collections of the Polish-born designer. Loosely fusing modern geometric designs inspired by Russian constructivism and a 1960s modernist vision, Katarzyna’s collection exuded sophistication, intensity and playful fantasy. Hats were by milliner Tara O’Callaghan.

The Boudicca Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 29 November 2002. At this event Boudicca designers Brian Kirkby and Zowie Broach presented garments from their collections. The outfits selected epitomised Boudicca's uncompromising, experimental tailoring and non-conformist, conceptual design.

Fashion in Motion: Men in Skirts

The Men in Skirts Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 27 February 2002. This event featured men in designer skirts, dresses, kilts, sarongs, kaftans and frock coats. Internationally renowned designers reappropriated the skirt for men, a garment which until relatively recently was worn by both sexes.

Fashion in Motion: Tata-Naka

The Taka-Nata Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 31 May 2002. Twins Tamara and Natasha Surguladze have christened their dress label Tata-Naka, in memory of their collective childhood nickname. Graduates of Central St Martins, the sisters were born in Tbilisi, capital of Georgia, and ethnic influences are evident in the long skirts and boots predominant in the Autumn 2002/Winter 2003 collection.

The Curvaceous Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 26 October 2001. This event was a collaboration between the V&A and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design which looked at historical undergarments and their influence on contemporary design.

Fashion in Motion: Robert Cary-Williams

The Robert Cary-Williams Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place in September 2001. Robert Cary-Williams trained in fashion design at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design in London and established his own label in 1998. This event was the first showing of his Spring/Summer 2002 Collection following its debut at London Fashion Week.

Fashion in Motion: Catherine Walker

The Catherine Walker Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 31 August 2001. Largely self-taught, Catherine Walker has been influenced by the work of British photographer John French and by the technique and spirit of traditional French couturiers such as Madeleine Vionnet. One of the few couturiers living and working in London, Walker has created a couturier’s atelier along traditional lines.

The Clements Ribeiro Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place in July 2001. Suzanne Clements and Inacio Ribeiro both trained in Fashion Design at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design in London. They established their label in 1993 and quickly developed a reputation for their witty and ironic approach to fashion.

The Chunghie Lee Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place in April 2001. In her work Korean artist and fashion designer Chunghie Lee reinterprets the colours and shapes of traditional Korean clothing and pojagi (Korean patchwork).

The Pleats Please by Issey Miyake Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 25 May 2001. The Pleats Please collections were first launched in 1993. The Spring/Summer 2001 collection celebrates the world of natural light and shadow and includes the following ranges: Stitch Denim, Flower Garden, Stripe Montage and Side Wave.

The Charles and Patricia Lester Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place in August 2000. Charles and Patricia Lester design simple, fluid garments in lustrous velvets, silks and devorés, hand-painted using special techniques of dye application.

The Tristan Webber Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 19 April 2000. Motivated by the chemical formula for adrenaline, Tristan Webber's collection mimics the body's changing skin patterns which are the result of fright, fight and flight.

The Pip Hackett Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 15 March 2000. Milliner Pip Hackett graduated from the Royal College of Art, and creates hats, headpieces and hair accessories that are stylish concoctions of feathers, flowers and sculptural shapes.

The Anna Sui Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 16 February 2000. Sui’s Spring 2000 'Rococo Gypsy' collection was inspired by the 18th century, a time when women were first empowered with theories of liberation and fashion was at its frilliest and most embellished.

The Arkadius Fashion in Motion live catwalk event took place on 19 January 2000. Arkadius left Poland in 1994 to study at St Martin’s College of Art and Design in London. Three years later Isabella Blow discovered him and in 1997 he set up his own label (while still studying).
