Viking Thunder Clap

'Viking clapping' of Iceland fans

Iceland at the UEFA European Championship during UEFA Euro 2016, Iceland's fans became widely known for their 'viking clap' or 'volcano clap' with a 'huh' chant.

During 2018 FIFA World Cup, this clap came into the spotlight once again.

Origin

It originated with fans of Scottish club Motherwell F.C. and was passed on to the Icelandic fans when Motherwell faced Icelandic team Stjarnan in a Europa League game.[1]

Huh chant may originated with film 300[2][3]

Other teams

Canberra Raiders fans became widely known for the 'Viking clap', a nod to the viking chant recently made famous by fans of the Iceland national football team.[4][5][6][7] Similarly, fans of the Minnesota Vikings have also adopted the 'Viking clap' to show support for the team, chanting 'skol' rather than the original 'huh' chant.[citation needed]

In honouring them, the Vancouver Canucks first used the 'Viking clap' at the final career home game for now-retired Swedish twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin on April 5, 2018[8].

The Carolina Hurricanes perform a variant called "The Storm Surge."[9]
