Charlotte County (2016 population 25,428) is located in the southwestern portion of New Brunswick, Canada. The courthouse and jail for the county were located in St. Andrews, but now serve only as a tourist attraction, as the civic functions have been transferred to St. Stephen.
The Bayside Port Corporation, located on the St. Croix River of the Bay of Fundy midway between St. Stephen and St. Andrews, has three berths with lengths of 100 m (330 ft), 80 m (260 ft), and 140 m (460 ft) and corresponding depths of 8.1 m (27 ft), 6.5 m (21 ft), and 9.75 m (32.0 ft). The approach channel has a depth of 21.3 m (70 ft). A ship loader is used for quarried material.
The Bayside Marine Terminal is a two berth facility. The main source of traffic is in the areas of gypsum, a byproduct of the exhaust scrubber at the nearby Emera natural gas combustion power plant, and potatoes. The new private non-containerized temperature sensitive foods storage facilities will increase total volume of traffic, making Bayside one of the most important and fastest growing ports in the Maritimes.
The Charlotte County Archives is a collection of thousands of original documents reflecting various individuals, groups, and businesses who have contributed to the social, cultural, economic and political life of Charlotte County, New Brunswick. Its collections date back to the 18th century. Visitors to the Archives have access to more than 5,000 photographic images dating from the 1850s, manuscripts and theses, Charlotte County newspapers, maps and architectural drawings, letters, diaries, and ships' logs. The reference room includes family histories, and other genealogical resources, a small research library and microfilm readers.
The Charlotte County Archives, a not-for-profit organization, was established in 1975 by the Charlotte County Historical Society. The Archives has occupied the Old Gaol since 1982, and the building is provided and maintained by the Province of New Brunswick. The Province provides some financial support, but the majority of the Archives' operating funds is derived from donations and fund raising activities.
The old Charlotte County Gaol was built in 1832 and sits next to the Charlotte County Courthouse. It is built of 2 1⁄2 ft-thick (0.76 m) square granite blocks. Each claustrophobic cell is accessed by a narrow iron door, the only daylight coming from even narrower windows. The building housed prisoners from 1832 to 1979.

Although having a strong tourism sector, Charlotte County, like most of Southwestern New Brunswick, principally relies on an industrial resource-oriented economy.
The aquaculture industry forms the economic backbone of the county, with lobster, salmon, and herring fishing being of significance. Connors Bros., the largest sardine canning facility in North America, is located in Blacks Harbour. Cooke Aquaculture is an Atlantic Salmon farming company, founded and headquartered in St. George. 18% of the entire workforce of the county is employed in the aquaculture industry, providing over 2000 full time jobs.
Electrical generation is historically significant, with the Point Lepreau Nuclear Power Station, the only nuclear power station outside of Ontario, lying just past the county boundary in the east. The site is home to a nuclear research centre, currently undergoing expansion with the construction of a second reactor at Point Lepreau. Hydroelectric dams operate in St. George and St. Stephen, although the St. Stephen facility is being decommissioned.
The county was founded on the forestry industry, which, although diminished in recent years, still has a place in the economic picture of the county. A paper mill, operated by JD Irving, is located in Utopia, and Flakeboard Co Ltd operates outside of St. Stephen. In recent years, logging has greatly increased in the county.
Other areas of economic strength are in the areas of chocolate and blueberry production. St. Stephen, where the chocolate bar was invented, is home to the Ganong chocolate company. In Pennfield, the blueberry industry is one of the largest in the country.
Although the county has an industrial economic base, the tourism industry is also key. Long known for its natural beauty, Charlotte County has historically served as the vacation destination for wealthy vacationers from New England and the rest of the Maritimes. Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt made their summer home in the county, on Campobello Island. Located in the New Brunswick Highlands at the northern terminus of the Appalachian Mountains, the county has rugged terrain, consisting of rolling hills, covered in thick, dense forest. The second tallest mountain in New Brunswick, Mount Pleasant, is located in the county. The county is home to three major rivers; the St. Croix, the Magaguadavic, and the Digdegaush, as well as hundreds of lakes, known to sportsmen for their populations of Smallmouth Bass and Atlantic Salmon. Most settlements in the county are located along the Bay of Fundy, with the ocean being a major attraction, especially on the isles of Deer Island, Campobello, and Grand Manan. New River Beach Provincial Park is located in the eastern part of the county. The Town of Saint Andrews is the tourist centre of the county, being home to the Algonquin Hotel and Golf Course, consistently ranked as the #1 golf course in the province.[by whom?]
