God of the sea Roman Religion and Mythology / Lexicon

Neptune was the god of the sea, but he was not a very important god in the Roman pantheon.

Neptune was often identified with the Greek god Poseidon, and like Poseidon often shown with a trident.

He was celebrated at the Neptunalia on July 23.
