What is football hooliganism?
Hooliganism describes the violent or aggressive actions of fans at matches.
In June 2003,David Beckham made a TV appeal asking fans not to ruin England's chances of qualifying for Euro 2004.
Uefa and Fifa have warned that teams could be thrown out of their tournaments if their fans get involved in violence or pitch invasions.
The Heysel disaster
- The Heysel disaster of 29 May, 1985 was one off the worst nights in the history of hooliganism. It led to the deaths of 39 fans and a five-year blanket ban on English clubs in European football.
- More than 60,000 supporters of Liverpool and Juventus had made their way into the Heysel stadium in northwest Brussels, many having spent the day drinking before the European Cup final.
- Fans had been chanting, waving flags and letting off fireworks, but the atmosphere became more violent and police were unable to prevent a contingent of Liverpool followers from stampeding towards rival fans.
- Thirty-nine Italian and Belgian fans died and hundreds were injured.
