Work has begun on a sixth park and ride site for Norwich - a project which will leave the city with more park and rides than most locations in the country.

The Cringleford site - which is due to open in March 2005 - is being built off the Thickthorn roundabout, between the exits for the A11 south and Hethersett.

The site is expected to cost about £3.65m to build and will provide space for more than 700 cars.

Norfolk County Council warned drivers to expect disruption during the work.

Award-winning strategy

Adrian Gunson, cabinet member for planning and transportation, said: "When this new site is open, park and ride sites in Norwich will provide parking for almost 5,000 cars.

"The success of the Norwich park and ride scheme has already been proven after it won the prestigious British Parking Association Park and Ride 2004 award earlier this year.

"This new site at Cringleford will enable even more people to avoid the congestion of the city centre."

Sam Ralph, director of planning and transportation, said: "Every effort will be made to minimise delays to motorists while the new park and ride site is being built.

"However, to ensure that the work can be carried out safely, there will be a 30mph speed limit on the affected length of the B1172 for the duration of the work."
