Message from the Town Administrator

Community Update: June 4, 2020, Public building openings and schedules.

Director's Message

To our patrons, visitors, and community members,
Thank you for your patience while we plan our next phase of library service. Following federal, state, and local policy, we are working to keep you and our staff as safe as possible through this pandemic.

On Monday afternoon, June 8th, the State Library Advisory Board disclosed guidelines for Phase II Library reopening.  As long as the Governor allows for full library reopening, we expect to open to the public on Monday, July 6th with restrictions in place. The following restrictions will apply.
The Library will close between 2:00-3:00 PM every day for disinfecting of commonly used surfaces.  If you or your children feel ill, please stay home to keep our staff and other patrons healthy, and so we can keep our doors open!

  • Masks or face coverings will be required, in accordance with Town Policy for all Municipal buildings in town.
  • Hand sanitizer stations will be available at the lower level entry and upstairs in the foyer.
  • All patrons will enter from the lower level.  The upper level can be used to exit the building.
  • Social Distancing of 6 feet or more is required from other patrons and staff.
  • Visual social distancing markers will indicate six-foot distancing in front of the service desks.
  • Due to social distancing requirements, the number of patrons allowed in the building at one time will be limited to 40.
  • Browsing collections is allowed by following the directional arrows between the aisles and maintaining social distancing protocols. Some aisles may be restricted due to the inability to social distance with staff.
  • Elevator use is restricted to one person or family group at one time.
  • Reference Services will continue online, by phone and in-person as long as social distancing is maintained.  (Other restrictions may apply).
  • Fewer computers will be available to the public and use is limited to 1-hour per person on both floors. Reservations recommended.
  • Toys will not be available for in-library use until all restrictions are lifted.
  • A “No Congregation” policy is in effect town-wide.
  • Group meetings and programs will not be allowed until all restrictions are lifted.
  • Virtual programs will continue via Zoom.  For a complete listing of our programs and events, see our Eventkeeper calendar page and social media.
  • Curbside Pickup will continue via registration.
Further changes may be made as we work to navigate this “new normal” in order to keep staff and patrons safe.  Changes will be posted to the library website.
Curbside Service:  curbside service is available by registration only so that we can control the number of requests at one time and possible traffic congestion.
Patrons must reserve a time slot by using our Eventkeeper calendar and selecting an available day and time. For complete details.

Your cooperation is most appreciated.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at [email protected] or 781-784-1578 x 1425 (please leave a message and I will return your call).

Update on Library Status: March 30, 2020

Sharon Public Library
  1. The library continues to be closed until further notice.  The book drop is open and emptied daily.   You may return items but please do not put donations in the book drop.

2. Program & meeting spaces
All programs have been cancelled and meeting spaces will not be available until further notice.

3. Return items:
During the time that we are closed due to Covid-19, the Sharon Public Library is waiving all fines so patrons won't accrue any late fees until June 30, 2020. Patrons can access our electronic materials remotely. You will be able to access remotely on a temporary basis thanks to Proquest. All holds will be suspended until the library reopens.

4. Remote access while the library is closed
Please utilize electronic resources like Overdrive/Libby, hoopla digital, and RBdigital Magazines to access library materials from the comfort of your home.

Check here or on our Facebook page for additional updates; or, email [email protected]

Staff Book Reviews

While the library is closed during the COVID-19 crisis, we hope that you're still reading! To inspire and entertain our patrons during this time, staff will be sharing reviews of what we have been reading. Click here to enjoy.  Any titles sound interesting? Consider requesting Sharon-owned items to be picked up curbside!

Online & Remote Access Tools Through SPL

If you are practicing social distancing, self-isolation, or simply exercising due caution, the Library can help you stay connected and safe through our online and remote access tools:
  • Overdrive and its corresponding free app, Libby, allow users to borrow and read or listen to e-books and e-audiobooks on their computers, phones, tablets, or other devices. Get started on your computer by visiting Overdrive and signing in using your library card and PIN (the standard PIN is "ocln"); or by downloading Libby onto the device of your choice for free.
  • RBdigital Magazines gives patrons free access to new and back issues of dozens of popular magazines. To use this service, visit RBdigital Magazines and sign in or make a free account. Or, download the RBdigital app (Apple, Android, Kindle Fire).
  • The New York Times is available for free online. To access it, visit the Library's catalog and click "New York Times" on the left-hand sidebar. Click "Redeem" next to the digital access code provided, then sign in or create a free account. When your code runs out after 72 hours, simply get a new one by following this process again.
  • Hoopla provides limited streaming access to movies, TV shows, e-books, e-audiobooks, and more. Access it through the hoopla website or by downloading the hoopla app (Apple, Android) and sign in or create an account using your library card number. Please note: SPL has a limit of 2 borrows per month for hoopla users.
