Georg Strøm 5.0 out of 5 starsit is essential to read in advance if you want to make the best use of the book 23 July 2017Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase I used this book for a trip to look on old buildings and marble in Rome. It contains a wealth of details about the different places to visit, including information about specific attractions you otherwise might overlook, and background information about the different sites, including how they looked in classic time.

I found, it is essential to read in advance if you want to make the best use of the book, and perhaps use some high-liners and post-it notes as bookmarks.. It is impossible to absorb all the information about an attraction when you are there, and it may ruin your experience if you try to read all the description of all the things you see. However, you can get a lot of interesting background information from this book. Be aware this is a book about Rome, Ostia is not included. Helpful Comment Report abuse E. L. Wisty VINE VOICE 4.0 out of 5 starsI wish I'd had it when in Rome... 24 April 2013Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase This book contains a wealth of information about the archaeological sites of Rome. The breadth of coverage is extraordinary - much more than just the standard tourist sites. I purchased this to follow up after visiting Rome but I really wish I'd had it when I was there. It will tell you much more than the standard tourist guides and even talk about many things which are not identified or spoken of at all in those. Indeed I feel a bit annoyed now that I had not known about some of these things which were once right in front of my face or under my feet whilst I was actually standing there.

The diagrams are not necessarily ideal - black and white line drawings - but they're more than adequate. It's quite a chunky book so far from being something to slip into a pocket, more a rucksack. But these are minor drawbacks. It's an excellent work and a must-have for anyone exploring Rome's ancient ruins. 5 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuse SDS 5.0 out of 5 starsAuthoritative and readable 11 August 2018Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase Authoritative volume. Very readable but in view of its length needs to be read well in advance of a visit or as a reference work. For the first time in my life, I committed the heresy of taking a highlighter pen to to a book to make it more useful in the field. Helpful Comment Report abuse Amazon Customer 4.0 out of 5 starsextremely useful book 6 May 2019Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase this most useful book , re the archaeological sites in Rome , is clear well written and very comprehensive Helpful Comment Report abuse STEVEN SHERLOCK 5.0 out of 5 starsit shows you all the sites 7 December 2018Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase i'liked it alot so much i'got another copy for my friend who missed most of the sites on his family vist to rome .on my vist i'wish i'had this book but i'didnt so alot i'didnt know about . but its a nice size book with maps and it does cover every site of ancient rome and museums. Helpful Comment Report abuse Alexandre Lavrov 5.0 out of 5 starsPossibly the best book to have when you visit ruins in Rome 14 February 2017Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase The is possibly the best book to have in your bag when you are exploring the Ancient Rome on foot. The author tells the story of every major site and also describes in detail many small gems that I would hardly think of visiting if it wasn't for this book. Written by a University Professor, the book is thorough and accurate, but at the same time accessible to a layman with basic knowledge of Roman history. I wish all guides were this useful! I knew a bit about it already, but this book is a goldmine of information, and it has really taught me a lot. It'll be the first item into my suitcase for my next visit, that's for sure. Highly recommended, both for the novice and the more advanced student. A truly impressive work. If something catches your eye you can search the book and find out more about it.
It was great for the bigger sites too, especially the forum, but it'd take days to follow it through there in full. Helpful Comment Report abuse See all 27 reviews Write a customer review
