Sheriff of Norwich
From 1403 until 1835, Norwich had the distinction of being able to elect one Mayor and two Sheriff's annually. This 432 year old privilege was abolished by the municipal Reform Act, which decreed only one Sheriff could be elected from 1835 onwards. In 1909 the 506 year old status of Mayor was elevated to Lord Mayor by King Edward VII.
Norwich is one of only 15 UK towns and cities to appoint a Sheriff. The appointment is made annually. Members of the majority political group on the Council make the decision as to who is to become Sheriff. The role is honorary and apolitical.
High Sheriffs of Shires and Counties are appointed by the Queen.
Each new Lord Mayor and Sheriff take up their new positions in a special ceremony held on the Council's Annual General Meeting in May each year.
The civic office is your contact point if you have any questions regarding invitations to an event. There are also a number of annual civic events which take place every year. The Lord Mayor's office can provide you with further information.
