Greece and Sweden won

Eurovision 2011: Semifinals results revealed

The European Broadcasting Union has made public the voting results from the two semifinals of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest. Greece won the first show 11 points ahead of the actual winner of the competition, Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, Sweden became the clear winner of the second semifinal.

Below you can check the results:

Semifinal 1

  1. Greece (133)
  2. Azerbaijan (122)
  3. Finland (103)
  4. Iceland (100)
  5. Lithuania (81)
  6. Georgia (74)
  7. Hungary (72)
  8. Serbia (67)
  9. Russia (64)
  10. Switzerland (55)
  11. Malta (54)
  12. Armenia (54)
  13. Turkey (47)
  14. Albania (47)
  15. Croatia (41)
  16. San Marino (34)
  17. Norway (30)
  18. Portugal (22)
  19. Poland (18)

Semifinal 2

  1. Sweden (155)
  2. Denmark (135)
  3. Slovenia (112)
  4. Romania (111)
  5. Bosnia & Herzegovina (109)
  6. Ukraine (81)
  7. Austria (69)
  8. Ireland (68)
  9. Estonia (60)

  15. Israel (38)
  16. F.Y.R. Macedonia (36)
  17. Latvia (25)
  18. Cyprus (16)
  19. The Netherlands (13)

Generally speaking, the 20 qualifyers from the semifinals did not come as a surprise to many, with two remarkable exceptions: Armenia and Turkey missed the final for the first time. The absence of these two countries in last night's show could have influence the final outcome.

It is worth mentioning that Switzerland, tipped as one of the best songs and voices in the competition, made the final just one point ahead of Malta and Armenia. Also Belgium was very close to surpass Moldova and become the 10th qualifyer from the second semifinal. The returning San Marino was not lucky this time, with Senit ending up on the 16th position in semifinal 1.

There are also several countries to get low scores, at least in comparison with what bookmakers and fans predicted. Norway only managed to take 17th place in hte first semifinal. Albania, country to reach the final every year since 2008, came 14th in that show. And Israel, represented by former winner Dana International, was far to make the final.

How rich Greece first in the semi. I think it was one of the great songs amongst the many mediocre, then again it might be because its my type of music .

@ dimitris

Turkey had virtually none of it's beloved friends in the semi except Azerbaijan as for Russia I am pretty sure that the always objective televoting placed it higher but juries saved it a bit..
As for Greece you had friends in the semi and that's a fact congrats on winning the semi but let's be honest..San Marino would not have qualified with the same song at least in televote
I agree that Loukas was great and saved a what was going to be a tragedy

Richard M [19278] Mon 16 May 2011 11:34:56

Norway's song deserved to do badly - she was a nice girl but there were simply better songs.

Poland's failure was partly due to bad singing, but they hadn't got the sound balance right either, which made it sound worse than it was - never mind,

Lilou Dallas [64073] Mon 16 May 2011 10:03:44

I usually don't make such comments, but I needed to say that because I'm tired of the whole conversation about Greece-Cyprus exchanging 12 points. Greece and Cyprus are always in different semis because of that. But I see that the same thing doesn't happen with Romania and Moldova, even though they also exchange 12 or 10 points. And I see that in the second semi, Moldova got 10th place, in front of Belgium, with only 1 point gap... Well, you can make your own conclusions...

Karl P. [61041] Mon 16 May 2011 03:52:05

@San:
You hated one of my favorite entries in this year's contest (Austria) yet I don't find you annoying.

» San ● ♥ [60088] Mon 16 May 2011 03:17:45

@ qOkTuG ^^

The truth is, Greece defeated Azerbaijan in the first semi! So I find that rather nice than hurtful .

and you find me annoying? You don't even know me. You're just saying that because I dislike the Azeri entry. You wouldn't say anything if I liked it. THAT'S the truth .

Princess Engla [47430] Mon 16 May 2011 03:17:41

@Drusus 1.

Haters are gonna hate!

Ohh, and your favorite France flop badly!! YOU haven't any taste at all! Wohahahahahahahahahahaha! France was pure opera trash!

drusus 1 [10652] Mon 16 May 2011 02:18:33

Sweden winning the semi with pure trash and a singing duck? People have no taste at all. Unfortunately this means many more cheap and trashy Kempe songs in the future (sick!).

dimitris calling [57630] Mon 16 May 2011 01:34:18

Princess Engla,

Congratulations on your 3rd place!Well a bit for the first one as well!

Princess Engla [47430] Mon 16 May 2011 01:29:04

Loool at all people who said Sweden wouldn't qualify to the final. Haha ha ha! Eric truly shut up you bashers.

vatroslav markus [59999] Mon 16 May 2011 01:20:20

This is really interesting! Croatia reached the 15th place with 41 points. That means: it was NOT the worst song and we DIDN'T REACH the last place, as some people talked and there were rumours....we reached even more votes than the last year! Only 15 points to get through we needed. But seeing what songs passed from the first semifinal.... I think we deserved to qualify, but now we have what we have. Trully hope we ll have more luck in Baku next year!

Chwarae Teg [25827] Mon 16 May 2011 01:01:58

I was really sorry to see Bulgaria fail to qualify - I thought it was a very good song which was really well performed. Poli gave it everything. And at least she can sing, unlike one half of Azerbaijan.

However, I think she will probably win the Barbara Dex award!!

David A [53737] Sun 15 May 2011 23:37:11

SF1
Poland and Norway did not deserve that poor placing
Well Done San Marino for not coming last
Poor Glen ...so near hopefully next year is their year
Armenia ? won't take part next year
Well Done Finland !!

SF2
Netherlands did not deserve last place
Belgium was sooo close too better than Moldova
Well Done Austria...You deserve it !!
Slovenia ? ? where did she come from - shock they scored so high

I have a feeling there will be less than 43 countries in Azerbaijan next year...starting with Armenia and Netherlands withdrawing

B M [29866] Sun 15 May 2011 23:21:17

A shame that the Netherlands ended up last. Its a great song but the performance wasn't memorable..but the worst of 2011? Definitely not.

qOkTuG ^^ [53483] Sun 15 May 2011 21:59:32

@ » San ● ♥

You're extremely annoying.
I know the truth hurts you but you should learn how to accept it

Stavros Athens [25070] Sun 15 May 2011 20:59:33

Congratulations to Loukas/Stereo Mike and the whole greek team. What a great result against all odds and bets! Original things always find their way to success!

Thank you Europe!

- Although i voted for Germany as my favourite song and show, i also think Azerbaijan was wonderful and had more chances to win. No surprises for me there. Congratulations to Lena and the winners!

JOHN today [10570] Sun 15 May 2011 20:30:15

I didn't like the Greek song either. I think it was awful, but then quite a few songs in the first semifinal were awful. As for the second semifinal, I still cannot understand how Belgium almost reached the final: I suspect quite a few juries have been trying to be as politically correct as possible by voting for 'arty' songs...but the Belgian song was simply trash.
But to be quite honest: who cares what went through to the final, all that matters is that this year's top 10 seems very reasonable. So congratulations Azerbaijan, Italy and Sweden. And especially congratulations to Germany for one of the best show in the past few years - or perhaps ever - and definitely the best host ever: Anke Engelke was simply outstanding and she's my winner this year!

dimitris calling [57630] Sun 15 May 2011 14:55:18

Let's say that greece winning the 1st semi makes kinda sense as they had quite a few friends in the semi

JMAMG,

Greece was voted by 19 out of 20 countries in its semi and won fair and square!I understand you don't like the song but deal with the fact... What about Russia placing 9th?They had less friends in the semi?Turkey?Azerbaijan?

I'm so happy for Loukas!I admit i didn't expect him to win the semi but he gave the strongest and most soulful performance both in the semi and the final!Well done!

Van T [33371] Sun 15 May 2011 14:53:19

Any one who wants to withdraw can do so... So long farewell, aufwNEVERsehen, Goodbye!!! It's a competition so some times you win some times you looses. Deal with it.

I hope 3JS and the Netherlands understand that the return of juries isn't a reason to send a bad song.
(because at the very beggining of the season they said that they're in only because juries are back)
A hope this is a lesson learned for them (but it probably isn't, they will blame" political voting"

About the results, they are all logic, and fans fail as always Hungary/Estonia are quite g** songs , works well only in their "closed Euroclub area"
Malta 11th, well done, MJ style was indeed a sucess in televoting (because it was obvious this is a pure good song to non-fans ears)

Greece is also great and amazing, thanks to the rap part

Disco-rubbish songs always fail every year, when will fans understand it? I still don't understand why g** are so into this contest , really. And as expected they don't understand Ukraine/Georgie/Greece
And they're the same to blame Dima Bilan for winning in 2008.

Anyway perfect top 10 in an awful year, that was far from obvious before the contest, but Europe never dissapoint me (except for Italy, their huge diaspora will grant them a win in the next 5 year combined with juries that want them IN, and that's a pity, but of course fans will think their win is fair because it's a western country, no comment)

This great failure will not change fans anyway, they will come back with the same non-sense disco songs "favorites according to OGAY" next year.

Azerbaijan winning is the best thing that could have happened to the contest, after Lordi's win in 2006, because ESC is back to where it belongs, with hit song and good show, after this year's bad quality. But i can understand why fans don't like the fact Azerbaijan is hosting, a reason that have nothing to do with music. "omg no Euroclub , where will we live?" xD

Toho - [59455] Sun 15 May 2011 14:45:33

If Turks helped Azerbaijan so much as you guys claim, then why did Germany give 0 pts to Azerbaijan?
