A man named Guido says he saw a fire in a garbage can and tried to put it out so that it wouldnt spread. He says he found a lottery ticket inside, and when he checked the numbers, he found it was a winning ticket from two months earlier. The lottery commission is suspicious and the ticket is checked out to see if it has been altered. It is sent to the document section of the Centre for Forensic Sciences. The gunk and glue on the ticket are removed, and the investigator notices that one of the numbers has been glued on from another ticket. It is a microscopically-thin piece of paper that has been glued on. Guido had missed the jackpot by one number and disguised his altered ticket by covering it in gunk and burning it. He is arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit fraud.

In another story, a man named Hennessey deposits a cheque on a Friday night just before the bank closes. On Monday morning, the tellers manager notices that the cheque reads $106 while she had written on Friday that it was for $7106. The police are called. The document expert examines the cheque. There are no marks from erasures. The other tests yield no results either until the expert uses UV light and notices the word seventy and the number seven had been written on the cheque but had disappeared. Investigators must determine how Hennessey removed the words. The expert figures out that Hennessey made a disappearing ink that lasted longer than normal 48 hours instead of a few seconds. Hennessey had used drain cleaner to alter the pH balance of the ink. He plead guilty and was sentenced to two years.
