METALLICA's 'Death Magnetic' Reigns On European Album Chart - Sep. 25, 2008 Paul Sexton of Billboard.biz reports that METALLICA's "Death Magnetic" (Vertigo/Universal) marks its first full week on release by starting a second week atop European Top 100 Albums.

"Magnetic" added a further 59,000 sales to its opening, part-week total of 75,000 in the United Kingdom for a second week at No. 1 there, and continues to hold sway in Portugal, Finland, Denmark, Norway and the Belgian region of Flanders. Impressively, the title makes six more No. 1 debuts, in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Holland and Sweden, climbs 3-1 in Ireland and enters at No. 2 in Hungary. It loses only one of its five initial top billings in Europe, dipping 1-2 in France.

"Death Magnetic" sold 337,000 copies in the United States in its first full week of release to hold on to the top spot on The Billboard 200 chart.

METALLICA's No. 1 debut on the Billboard album chart with "Death Magnetic", made history. The No. 1 arrival made METALLICA the only band to have five albums debut in the top spot, breaking a tie at four albums held by THE BEATLES, U2 and the DAVE MATTHEWS BAND. "Death Magnetic" is also METALLICA's fifth consecutive studio effort to enter at No. 1, following 1991's self-titled "black album," 1996's "Load", '97's "Reload" and 2003's "St. Anger". The album sold 490,000 copies in just four days of release, arriving in stores on September 12 instead of the usual Tuesday. Death Magnetic is right up there with any record they did in the 80's. The only album I would put ahead of it is Master or maybe AJFA. There is not a single filler song on Death Magnetic while both Kill Em' All and RTL had a few duds on there IMHO.

1. Master
2-3. Tie between Death Magnetic and AJFA
4. Ride
5. TBA
6. KEA
7. Load
8. Reload
9. St. Anger

I agree with that list. I really dig Death Magnetic, but the only song that's a bit of a filler, IMO, is "Suicide & Redemption". I think that one get's a bit tedious, by repeating the same riff too many times. But DM is overall a killer album.

This is from billboard .com:

"Metallica's "Death Magnetic" holds tight at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 for a second week after its first full frame at retail. The Warner Bros. set sold 337,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan; it debuted with 490,000 last week after just three days of sales thanks to an off-cycle Friday release."

So, Metallica so far has sold 827,000 in the US so far, not to bad for a band that most of you put down most of the time. What a great CD.

Well after all these years, Metallica deserves the promotion. Unfortunately, with people stealing music, there are few bands that will ever be around or have the success of Metallica. The days of the record company getting behind a band is over.

It also is your opinion that Metallica "was" a great band, they still are a great band. Go see them live on their tour, my guess is you will be very impressed.

seen them lots of times, and they are pretty good live, i was there when they performed every second of the master of puppets album, but thats just it, they were performing their back catalogue with very few new numbers in there.

record companies get behind plenty of bands, when they think they can make some money out of them being the next big thing on the scene, with their fringes all flicked over and their skin tight jeans.

the stealing music argument is redundant, as this article has proved, nearly a million sales in two weeks? and downloading is killing music? please.

but thats beside the point. you can market anything with enough money thrown at it.

I agree you can market anything, look at Britney Spears, the question is who will be around in 10 years from now? Bands like KISS , Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, Metallica...etc can't continue forever, who will replace them? No downloading is not killing music, it is killing the record companies who use to get behind bands to sell records. That is why concert tickets are so high. I am not interested in arguing about that though, it won't change a thing. Good luck to new bands, they will need it!

Mate, sorry but you are not right here. It won't kill music/bands like Metallica or Rammstein who have enough money to produce the albums they put out. Less money for the record company, less money for production. Think for a second. Metallica put out such a great sound with The Black Album because they have time so stay in the studio and because they afford it. Do you see a band like "The Sword", for example, able to do that?

*********
That was exactly what I have said. Metallica, Rammstein and co. are not in trouble, because they can afford to produce the albums. But what do you do with less known bands (which have very little money)? How they will be able to produce the albums? You know, it's not enough to have great music if you cannot have great sound (look at the people who are complaining about how Death Magnetic sounds, while they admit the music is great). For exemple, do you think Pink Floyd would have the same status if they're music wasn't produced as good as it it is? Just imagine Confortably Numb without the "crystal sound" you know it.
Metallica spent $ 1.000.000 for "The Black Album". A less known band will never have this money if a record company won't contribute. And what is the solution? An "Abramovici" or "Warren Buffet" of music?

PS> sorry my english, I am sure I have made mistakes - I am not from US/UK....my native language is not english.

Nothing Metallica puts out (present & future) will flop. They've established themselves as a good selling band that draws sellout crowds at concerts. Whether you like the new album or not, whether they put out a country album next, Metallica will continue to sell millions of albums just based on their name alone.

New album is pretty good, much better than the last 3. It's not like RTL and before but those albums are ancient history.

a jock jock band selling under 2 million albums is a joke!

you cant compare metallica to real metal bands anymore , they have to be compared to jock rock bubblegum bands that recieve the same media hype like kid rock,ac/dc ect...
both those bands destroy metallica sales by the way!
ac/dc sold out 18 arenas in record time while metallica still has lower level seating in a lot of places.

the reality is metallica fangirls by 2-3 coppies of the cd and it looks like its selling alot, but you cant by 2-3 tickets for one person the arena , so the reality is theres no buzz beyond the fangirls since ticket sales are slow by bubblegum jock rock band standards!

That's exactly right & the death of record companies is going to do nothing to help out the newer bands. That's why I say, once these older established bands hang it up, who will take there place. If they are putting out poorly produced CD's, they won't be selling very many.

First, Spiderhunt, I see your point with RTL, that was the first album I bought from Metallica (Saw them in '84, changed my life). However, if Death Magnetic came out in '84, it would have been just as much a kick in the ass... The thing is, when I listen to RTL, I remember back to those days, and I had some pretty good fucking times back then.

What I like about DM is it's Metallica playing Metallica, not trying to reinvent itself by playing music better suited for other rock bands. And while there are many many bands playing music influenced heavily by Metallica (including my band), Metallica do their style pretty fucking good. I still rate RTL higher for innovation, but DM isn't that far behind it as an overall great listen... DM is also light years ahead of the Loads and St. Anger.. I did like St. Anger for it's rawness, but isn't something I keep in the car... DM is...

Zimzumm, I really could care less how many albums they sell. I bought the album and am very happy with it. The thing could fall off the charts right now, and I'd still listen to it... I don't listen to bands by how many albums they sell, but whether I like the album or not... probably why I own DM, and don't have Load or Reload...

This album is a step in the right direction however it still cannot be placed in the same category as any of the first four albums.

The riffs and speed are there however the album still lacks the song stucture and at times going in too many places at once. Metallica is known for on the fly time changes however, it seems to have worked against them this time around, as apossed to working FOR them in previous releases.

The two songs in my opinion which do earn the "Metallica" seal of quality are:

1- That was just your life.
5- All nightmare long.

But even All Nightmare long has some very strange parts which breaks up the song. The intro is totally awsome and so is everything they play up till the singing starts. "Still life, incarnation, still life, infamy, halucination, herericy" just doesn't feel right and stops the general build up of the song. However, the corus, "Hunt you down without mercy..." is awsome.

The whole album is sorta filled with small parts like the one mentioned above which forces so many of us to categorize this album as "just better than St. Anger". It is in fact very difficult to listen to at times.

I agree 100%. And that's a very rare thing thanks to the endless stream of retarded posts by self important teenagers here on Blabbermouth.

The album opener and All Nightmare Long with its outstanding chorus are classic Metallica, the rest is a big directionless patchwork of ideas. Better than RTL with this kind of songwriting, musicianship, production and lack of attitude? What a joke. Kids today...

I've heared lots of metal albums over the last two decades and I'd rate this album maybe a 7/10 at best, but it gets dragged down by the ridiculous production/mastering quality. Ted Jensen's inofficial message reminds me of Kevin Shirley in 2003, who wasn't too pleased with the final sound on Maiden's Dance Of Death album either. Cliff Burnstein = damage control.

What puzzles me the most about Metallica's sales numbers is the fact that all these consumers seem to be totally oblivious to other quality metal bands out there. Otherwise bands like Nevermore, Megadeth, Testament, Opeth or Moonspell would sell many more albums. Shows that the majority of the current Metallica fans are not metal (or music) connaisseurs - and that top notch quality has nothing to do with success.

I agree with you on the type of consumers out there. A good percentage of so-called Metallica fans are not even fans of metal. Many jumped on the bandwagon when the Black album was released, which is when Metallica really started its growing success. I can guarantee that some people in here are huge hiphop fans, but they still contribute to Metallicas record sales. But it comes down to who cares about record sales and thats the least thing i worry about when I want to hear the new Testament or new Megadeth, etc. Id rather have Metallica making millions of dollars than these stupid hiphop artists out there.

I'm not a fan of "This band sold ___ " and "That band sold ___" Say it what you will about the quality or possible lack thereof in Metallica's music in 2008 as opposed to 1986 but the world then didn't have the things it does now.

827,000 copies in the US alone is impressive now in 2008 as opposed to then. They're playing 32 shows in the US from October to January which some have already sold out and required extra dates and others have went on sale yet not got a lot of marketing and are still selling briskly.

They're still a HUGE marketing draw and what sickens me isn't the typical anti-Metallica jargon but morons who wouldn't know the first thing about selling music or anything to the public that think for some reason Metallica's going to tank. This album in 2008 is YEARS a head of St. Anger and worldwide is selling better than ANYTHING Metallica has put out since the Black Album.

Oh, but Music doesn't sell in 2008? What a load of bullshit. If you put out quality product, the public will buy it and I'll go out of my way to admit I haven't been truly thrilled with Metallica's last few albums like I have this one. The mixing could've been better and some of the overall structure of the album could've been better but I'll take it for how I see it.

This is a Metallica album worth buying and honestly, I'm glad I spent my money on it. How often has anyone heard that in this day and age?

Its a shame that we have young parents out there who allow their kids to be influenced by these hiphop artists and that really pisses me off. I've been around throughout most of Metallicas career and love all their music even as they grew older. For Metallica, as a metal band, to be selling millions of albums in this decade is an accomplishment considering how strong hiphop is. Fuck hiphop, their artists, and their fans. So after reading the insult to my intelligence statement from Cliff Burnstein I have now put a face to who is blocking action on DM.

Cliff has been part of many horrible decisions from telling Metallica SA was good this might be the 2nd worst decision he has made to underestimate and disrespect many fans when there is universal questions about sound quality. Letting James blow out his voice by touring too long for TBA is single handedly the worst call Cliff has made but when I hear about all the corporate reasons and how everyone loves the new sound and letting his artist be seen as corporate rock and not an ounce of integrity left I have to wonder why Metallica stays with this guy. They must see aside from TBA Burnstein has made about as many good calls for them as Bob Rock.

Metallica: Cliff Burnstein and Q Prime is hurting you get away and save what is left of your band before it's too late and they have you singing commercial jingles for Chevy or something. GET OUT METALLICA AND SHOVE A BUNCH OF DM HEADPHONE'S UP THAT OLD MAN'S ASS ON THE WAY OUT THE DOOR.

Better convince him we need a special edition with a DVD or some other bullshit in a couple months. Selling a corrected version of the same product twice seems like that would be appealing and profitable enough for this clown I bet. And this guy wonders why fans complain after 20 years of this kind of bullshit? I can't believe all the energy people have made just trying to get a good copy and this money grubber can't see a problem.

So, listening to Megadeth, Nevermore or Opeth makes you a metal (or music) connaisseur??? That's utter bullshit my friend...you're the poser around boasting about his taste...Personally, i tried to listen once to Megadeth, to see what's the fuss all about and laughed my ass off with Mustaine's shitty voice..interestingly many have acted accordingly! Opeth too was terrible to my ears! If you call yourself a true metalhead, you and the other smartasses out there who laugh at people listening to Metallica or Maiden, claiming that you'd listen to these things back in highschool, should hang yourselves.. I tell you i listen to lots more, like Rammstein, Disturbed, Pantera etc etc before you judge me as an angry teenager and have followed Metallica's carreer for as long as i can remember...i didn't know that disliking shitty vocals or music (imo always) makes me a music connaisseur...

Despite them being out-of-touch rockstars, I was suprised. It's not pure thrash but there's plently of thrash riffage, it's "thrash-rock" I guess, they went back to their roots without denying what they did in the 00's. I would have prefered a pure thrash metal album, maybe next time. Anyway I hope it keeps on selling, that's gonna be good for thrash, my favourite metal subgenre.

Opeth and proggy-metal of the sort is terrible. Boring and pretentious as fuck, I'd take Death Magnetic over the Opeth discography. Shit I'd take LOAD over it.

I have been listening to Metallica since 1985, in 1986 I was fortunate enough to see them open for Ozzy,in Columbus,Ohio and then again in Indianapolis in 1988 Van Halens Monsters of Rock and again in 1989 in Dayton,Ohio their first headling tour with queensryche opening up on the Damaged Justice Tour ,this was in April, at years end the album had gone double platinum, maybe triple, and Metallica was nominated for a grammy (lost to Jethro Tull who could forget) the album was considered a HUGE success, now after all these years 90 Million Albums sold worldwide and people are still giving them crap for making the load, reload albums,,most of you probably don't remember that part of what made Metallica so cool was that they did what they wanted to and did not care what anybody thought do any of you remember they NEVER got any airplay until TBA never made a video until AJFA they did not care what people thought I really doubt if they care now they make the albums they want to I am glad they did not turn into ACDC or ZZ Topp and keep the same sound for 35 or 40 years(I Love both those bands by the way) but my point is some people cannot keep making the same records and be satisfied and when its all said and done and they go down as the best band in history all of you will be back on the bandwagon again...Everything new coming out sounds ridiculous and very over produced....

It doesn't matter how many copies they sold. Truth is they are happy they have fans who are buying the album, and that's it.

If they sold one DM album, I'm happy that I listened to it.

I kind of left myself hanging out to dry on my last post and to set the record straight, when I said everything new coming out sounds very overproduced and ridiculous I was not refering to Metallica or Death Magnetic(I have had a real copy since september 4) I love every album they ever put out, some where just better than others(kind of like my ex's ha! ha!) this album is definitley the best since justice IMO and I am very glad they took on Rick Rubin to produce,Lars said himself that when he called Bob Rock to tell him that Rock was almost relieved because he said that he did'nt know what he was going to do with the band,,,In my opinion the band themselves started feeling this during the SA record it was the wisest thing for them to do at this point in their career coming full circle got there mojo back hetfield writing all the lyrics again was a must, there is bits and pieces of the first 4 records thru out DM if you can't look to yourself for inspiration who can you look to I am very happy with the record it sounds great>>>
