Board Confirms No Premier Cup Next Season
The FAW Premier Cup Board of Directors have confirmed that there will be no competition in 2008/09 following the withdrawal of BBC's sponsorship of the competition.
BBC Wales formally advised the Board of Directors in late January that they were not prepared to continue with their financial support beyond the current season. Consequently, the Board contacted all of the possible other broadcasters to ascertain any interest that they might have in the competition.
Competition Secretary, Malcolm Stammers said,
"There was some initial interest from two broadcasters, although this soon narrowed to one, and these discussions have been on-going now for sometime. But regrettably it has not been possible to bring them to a satisfactory conclusion that would guarantee the competition's future."
He added, "At last week's Board meeting, it was agreed that I should make contact with all the shareholders (and potential shareholders) and advise them of the current situation, which is that there will not be a competition in season 2008/09 so that all are aware for planning purposes with regard to next season.
The Board agreed, as it has done so far, to continue to 'leave no stone unturned', in trying to secure the competition's future, but as it stands there will be no competition in season 2008/09.
The announcment may not mean the end of the Competition entirely though as Mr. Stammers continued,
"The Board agreed, as it has done so far, to continue to 'leave no stone unturned', in trying to secure the competition's future, but as it stands there will be no competition in season 2008/09.
"The Board will meet again in early summer to ascertain whether the situation has changed at all and until that time I will be making the usual arrangements for the conclusion of the financial year and the calling of the Annual General Meeting.
"The Board felt that shareholders and possible participating clubs needed to be made aware of the situation prior the end of the current season.
Principality Welsh Premier League clubs have always enjoyed the challenge of playing against the Football League clubs in this competition, and there have been a number of excellent results for the League in the competition. The New Saints, Rhyl, Llanelli, Port Talbot, Carmarthen, Barry Town and Bangor City have all enjoyed victories over Football League opposition in the Premier Cup, and the financial benefits of the lucrative competition will be sorely missed.
