Robert Swinhoe.

Robert Swinhoe (ca. 1863?)

ROBERT SWINHOE was born in Calcutta, India in 1836. In 1852 he was sent to London for his education, but while attending the University of London in 1854 he was recruited into the China consular corps by the Foreign Office. Prior to his departure for Hong Kong in May of that year, he deposited a small collection of British bird nests and eggs with the British Museum of Natural History.

Throughout the ensuing 23 years, Swinhoe continued his pursuit of the study of birds and other forms of wildlife, and it was through his status as HM Consul that he had unique access to China and its great islands of Taiwan (he was the first Western consul to be stationed on 'Formosa') and Hainan. The information he gathered and dispensed was of the greatest interest to his fellow naturalists worldwide. This was the 'golden age' of natural history, in fact, and there was nothing more important than acquiring accurate knowledge of the geographical distribution of species. During his career Swinhoe published over 120 articles on the zoology, geography and ethnography of Eastern and Northern China. Even though he was strictly speaking an amateur naturalist, he obtained within the scientific circle of the day the authority which allowed him to name and describe new species - over 200 birds and dozens of mammals - which remain objects of continued study by ornithologists and zoologists of many nationalities to this day. He also collected innumerable specimens of fish, reptiles, insects and other invertebrates and shipped them dutifully to the institution-bound specialists back in England who relied on field collectors for their studies. All of this was accomplished while he successfully pursued the strenuous career of consular representative, with its linguistic and diplomatic demands. It is not surprising to find that, at the end of his days in China (he retired in ill-health in 1873 from the Consular Corps, and died in 1877) he was widely regarded as "one of the most successful exploring naturalists that have ever lived" (P.L. Sclater, president of the Zoological Society of London).

The purpose of this page is to gather together and present a bibliographic overview of Robert Swinhoe's life and career. Contemporary illustrations - some of them accompanying an article in which the creature was first described - by such artists as John Gould, Joseph Wolf, Joseph Smit and J.G. Keulemans, and others, have been included when possible, and on occasion a modern illustration is utilized in order to assist in gaining a better understanding of Swinhoe's contributions.

The following list of articles and letters (and one book) represent what I know of the published output of Robert Swinhoe. Each item is numbered in approximate order of appearance. Following some are sequentially listed birds (RSB) or mammals (RSM), representing species discovered and/or named by RS and presented in print for the first time within that article. His scientific name is given first, then an English name he applied or can be derived from his description, or, applied subsequently by others. Then follows the currently accepted scientific nomenclature, along with the currently accepted English name. Those species which have not survived as "good" have an asterisk beside its number indicating this, and will have only RS' names included here.

In the case of birds, DeSchauensee 1985 and Cheng 1994 are generally the authoritative sources - primarily because they extend their listings to geographical subspecies, which include many of RS' finds. Other more recent sources (such as the excellent 1996 checklist put together by Inskipp, Lindsey and Duckworth for the Oriental Bird Club) eliminate such locally found varieties. Mammals are confirmed in Sowerby 1943, Tate 1947 and Hsu 1984 and noted appropriately. Asterisked entries will have no data beyond the names given by RS because, as RS put it, they have been "knocked on the head". This means subsequent research (usually by Swinhoe himself) rendered these individuals either invalid or synonymous with another 'good' species. I am in the process of locating updated information continually, and some of these entries may in time come to be amended.

A bibliography (including a key to the various publications in which RS' writings appeared) appears linked at the end of this list. There is also a list of the asterisked species, and what most likely brought their demise. Please note: This is intended as a bibliographic compilation. While attention and effort has been made to taxonomic accuracy (ie., spelling, currency, etc.) it is not claimed to be scientifically significant, accurate or complete. It is hoped it will provide interested readers with an overview of Robert Swinhoe's life efforts as a naturalist. All errors are mine, and if any question arises regarding any of the factual material contained within this list, please contact me.
