    TNN | Updated: May 31, 2013, 3:32 IST

PANAJI: Eminent Indian scientist and son of Goa, Dr Ragunath Anant Mashelkar was conferred Goa's highest civilian honour, the Gomant Vibhushan, at the hands of governor B V Wanchoo on Thursday, the 26th statehood day of Goa at a function at the Kala Academy, Panaji.
The award has been conferred to recognize Mashelkar's exceptional and distinguished services in the advancements in science and technology. It comprises a glass-encased traditional brass lamp, a citation and a cash award of 5 lakh. Mashelkar was also the chairperson of the Goa golden jubilee development council that prepared the Goa Vision Document 2035.
Wanchoo recollected Mashelkar's eventful 11 years as the director general of the India's council of scientific and industrial research (CISR) and praised his "path-breaking contributions to science and technology". Commending him as "one of the most leading scientists of our times", the governor said Mashelkar has created a legacy of pride for Goa and the country.
Mashelkar becomes the third eminent Goan to receive the Gomant Vibhushan since its inception. The first Gomant Vibushan was given to nuclear scientist Dr Anil Kakodkar and the second to architect Charles Correa.
In his acceptance speech, Mashelkar said that this was the most precious evening of his life because the award came from his birthplace. He said the award will occupy a place of pride in his home and his heart till the last day of his life. Referring to the Goa vision document, Mashelkar said the people's love for Goa, hard work and positivity will help fulfill the objectives of the Goa vision document. He commended the government for starting implementation of the vision document recommendations. Chief minister Manohar Parrikar lauded Mashelkar for three qualities. "The first is his pride in being a Goan, the second is his high positive attitude and third is his extreme hard work," he said.
Art and culture minister Dayanand Mandrekar congratulated Mashelkar. Opposition leader Pratapsingh Rane, chief secretary B Vijayan and secretary for art and culture P Krishnamurthi were also present. more from times of india cities Delhi news todayMumbai RainsBangalore RainsDelhi EarthquakeChennai RainsOdisha Elections 2019Delhi PollutionMumbai FloodsAP Elections 2019
