Roman Emperor (211-217 CE)

Historical Persons / Romans

Lucius Septimius Bassianus, later Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (188-217 CE), nicknamed Caracalla, was the elder son of emperor Septimius Severus. He was appointed heir to the throne as co-emperor as an adolescent, but when Septimius Severus died in Britain in 211,both Caracalla and his younger brother Geta became joint emperors.

The relationship between the two emperors were very strained, and Caracalla had his brother and many of his supporters killed in late 211 in a slaughter that lasted two weeks and brought chaos to the city of Rome.

As sole emperor Caracalla introduced many reforms, most notably the concession of Roman citizenship to all residents of the empire and rises of the pays of the soldiers.

Caracalla spend most of his time as emperor travelling, often visiting various religious places, and during such a trip he was killed, maybe by his own bodyguards instigated by the praetorian prefect Macrinus.

Caracalla started the construction of the baths that still bear his name.
