Japanese metalart dates from the introduction into Japan of metal working from the Asiatic Continent in the Yayoi period (200 B.C. to 400 A.D.). Techniques developed gradually, but particularly under Buddhist influence in the Asuka period (540 to 642 A.D.) they progressed more rapidly and the basis of a Japanese traditional metal art emerged in the later period of Nara and Heian (708 to 1184 A.D.).
