Authority Headings Search Overview

To search Library of Congress Authorities most effectively, please note the differences between each available search type. General searching tips are listed on this page, with more extensive help available for each search type:

Subject, Name, Title, and Name/Title Headings Searches

Subject, name, title, and name/title headings searches look for headings and cross-references that start with the words in your search query. Your search terms are matched in exact order.

  1. Enter the left-most words of the heading you are looking for in the search box. Remove initial articles from title headings and name-title headings.
  2. Select the headings search type you wish to perform.
  3. Select the number of results per page.
  4. Select the Begin Search button to perform the search.

Your search results are presented as a Headings List -- a browsable list of the headings that fall nearest alphabetically to the first words of your search query. To retrieve authority information for a heading, select the red button beside the heading, then select the link for the heading or the references of interest to view the MARC encoded authority record (a labelled display is also available).

Keyword Authorities (All) Searches

Keyword searches look for headings and cross-references that contain the words in your search query. Search words can be entered in any order. There are a limited number of stopwords. Note: Keyword Authorities (All) retrieves all heading types in a single search. However, only headings and cross-references -- not all the fields in an authority record -- are keyword searchable.

  1. Enter any combination of words from the heading you are looking for in the search box. Use quotation marks to identify words you want to search as a phrase (e.g., "solar energy").
  2. Select the Keyword Authorities (All) search type.
  3. Select the number of results per page.
  4. Select the Begin Search button to perform the search.

Your search results will be presented as a Headings List -- a finite list of headings that contain the words of your search query. To retrieve authority information for a heading, select the red button beside the heading, then select the link for the heading or the references of interest to view the MARC encoded authority record (a labelled display is also available).

  • Use the "Headings List" button to return to your list of hits.
  • Use the "New Search" button to enter a new Authorities search.

Use the browser's [Back] button to exit help and resume searching.
