A Message from Internet Archive Founder, Brewster Kahle

Brewster Kahle, Founder & Digital Librarian

Dear Internet Archive Community,

We need your help to ensure that anyone curious enough to seek knowledge will be able to find it here, for free. We’re an independent, non-profit website that the entire world depends on.

We are powered by gifts averaging $45.00. If everyone who uses the Internet Archive donates just $5, we can keep offering these services for free and ad-free. That’s right, for the price of a paperback, you can sustain a library the whole world trusts. If the Internet Archive is useful to you, please donate today!

Did you know, this past year:

  • We’ve fixed 1.5 million broken links in Wikipedia using the Wayback Machine?
  • Journalists have cited the Internet Archive 1200+ times to set the record straight?
  • Readers have borrowed 4 million books and downloaded 900 million texts with complete reader privacy?

The key is to keep improving—and to keep it free.

The Internet Archive has only 150 staff but runs one of the top websites in the world. Reader privacy is very important to us, so we never track you. We don’t accept ads. But we still need to pay for servers, staff and rent.

The Internet Archive is a bargain, but we still need your help.

If you find our site useful, please consider chipping in $5, $25, $50 or whatever you can afford to keep the Internet Archive going in 2019. I promise you, it will be money well spent.

Thank you.

Brewster Kahle
Founder & Digital Librarian

Where your donation goes

Technology: We preserve 66 billion URLS per year in the Wayback Machine! We’ve saved 45 petabytes (that’s 45,000,000,000,000,000 bytes) of data. That takes a lot of servers, bandwidth and power. The cost of storing information in our data centers is a fraction of the cost of Amazon Cloud.

Staff: Most top websites employ huge staffs. We employ 150 people around the world—engineers, archivists, librarians and book scanners. Most of our staff could be making much more at a company driven by profit, but they choose to work for a nonprofit powered by a huge mission.

Projects: We are gearing up to digitize 500,000 books per year and make them available to readers worldwide through Open Libraries, creating the equivalent of a great modern urban library online.

How do we create new apps that aren’t creepy? We’re convening developers around the world to build a Decentralized Web—without the centralized points of control that make it easy to censor or spy on you.

Thanks for donating. Would you consider becoming a monthly donor starting next month?

Monthly support helps ensure that anyone curious enough to seek knowledge will be able to find it here. For free. Together we are building the public libraries of the future.
