Getting started

This guide takes you through the steps of activating online access for your subscription, and managing authentication methods.

Online access

An institutional site licence must be agreed to (or signed in the case of consortia licences) when you purchase a subscription to any of our online journals, and before you can activate online access. If you have not yet agreed to an institutional site licence, explore the available licence options.

Institutions may purchase either single-site or multi-site access to our full journals collection, subject-based packages, or individual journal titles. Your licence outlines how, and from where, your library users can access our online content. Online access provides your users with 24-hour access to all the Oxford Journals content covered by your subscription.

Online access is available through a collection subscription, archive subscription or purchase, or as an online-only or combined (print and online) subscription when you subscribe by title.

Before you set up online access

The following details are needed before you set up online access:

  • Subscriber number: This is usually an 8- or 12-digit number. If you do not have a subscriber number, contact our Customer Services team. If your number has fewer than 8 digits, prefix it with up to four zeros, as required. If you have more than one subscriber number, you can activate each one individually or activate them under a single account.
  • Contact details: A contact name, address, and valid email address are required. We advise that the email address be a shared address so staff changes do not impact on the management of your account (e.g. "[email protected]"). You will also need to choose a password which will be for library administrator use only.
  • IP addresses: You can register IP addresses for site-wide access to the content covered by your subscription. In other words, your library users can access content in this way without the need for individual user names and passwords. The IP addresses must be registered to your institution and not a public proxy server. Your IT department should be able to supply you with the IP addresses for your institution.

Set up online access

Register for an Oxford Academic account, then log in and follow the online prompts. (See below if you are a consortia customer.)

  1. Add your subscription: Select "Activate Subscriptions and Trials" and input your institutional subscriber number(s). The entire list of journals associated with the subscriber number(s) will appear. You do not need to reactivate online access when you renew your subscription.
  2. Input your institution’s IP addresses: If this is the first time you have activated a subscription, you will be prompted for your institution’s IP addresses. When you add further subscriptions, the IP addresses you have previously entered will be automatically applied. If you need to add other IP addresses in future, you can do this by selecting "Institutional Settings" under your Oxford Academic account.
  3. Manage your current subscription: You can view a list of your current subscriptions via the "Current Online Subscriptions/Short Term Access" option within your Oxford Academic account. Any new journals that you subscribe to will be automatically activated and listed (provided the subscriber number they are listed under has been activated).

If you currently have several accounts and wish to consolidate your details, please contact our Customer Services team. We regret that we are not able to consolidate subscriptions to one subscriber number when you have more than one delivery address (e.g. your institution covers more than one site, or some of your titles may be mailed to you directly via us but we mail other titles to your agent).

Set up online access as a consortium administrator

We arrange the setup of accounts and trials for consortia customers. To set up access to our journals, please contact your account manager who will request the information needed.

Oxford Academic account

Your account can be accessed through the Sign In link in the top right corner of the Oxford Academic website. As a library administrator, you can use your account to manage all of your online subscriptions, including the Oxford Journals Archive. You can:

  • View your current subscriptions and activate new subscriptions
  • Manage authentication methods, such as IP address, OpenAthens, and Shibboleth
  • Access usage statistics
  • Manage OpenURL linking
  • Manage institutional branding settings

Authentication methods

In order for your library users to have full on-site access to the journals in your subscription, register all of the appropriate IP addresses associated with your institution and covered by your licence.

If your institution uses a proxy server, this should be a secure network that is only accessible to authorized users. This includes single sign-on authentication methods such as EZproxy.

In addition, Shibboleth or OpenAthens authentication can also be used for remote access to Oxford Journals content. To activate these methods for your institution, access the Institutional Settings page and enter your Organization ID and Entity ID (provided by OpenAthens/Eduserv or your Shibboleth IDP). Once your institutional access has been activated, users at your institution can choose "Sign in via your institution" on the Oxford Academic sign-in page in order to access content remotely using their institutional username and password.

Access to Oxford Journals content is also available via a number of gateways that offer this feature, such as EBSCO Electronic Journals and Ingenta Connect. Please contact your preferred provider for further information.

Our journals can be accessed using Shibboleth by subscribing institutions who are members of

  • AAF (Australia)
  • CANARIE (Canada)
  • COFRe (Chile)
  • DFN-AAI (Germany)
  • Edugate (Ireland)
  • GaKuNin (Japan)
  • IDEM (Italy)
  • InCommon (United States)
  • RedIRIS (Spain)
  • RENATER (France)
  • SWITCH (Switzerland)
  • UK Access Management Federation (United Kingdom)

We continue to review the list of supported federations. Please contact us to register your interest if you would like Shibboleth access but are not a member of a federation we currently support.

Service providers

Registering for access directly with Oxford Journals enables users to make full use of the features and functionality available from our Oxford Academic platform. For your convenience, our online titles are also available through a selection of intermediaries and service providers such as:

  • EBSCO Electronic Journals Service (EJS)
  • Ingenta Connect
  • OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online

There is no additional charge to our subscription price. However, service providers may charge libraries for use of their service. Please contact your preferred intermediary for further details.

Usage statistics

Once you have activated online access, you can view our COUNTER-compliant journal usage statistics whenever you like via your Oxford Academic account. Explore our Usage Statistics guide to find out more.
