App FAQs

As part of the migration of all Oxford University Press and society journals to the new Oxford Academic platform, we have replaced our existing journals/society apps with new and improved apps.

The previous apps will continue to work, and previously downloaded content will still be accessible. However, they will not update with new content, and are no longer available on the App Store. The new apps can now be found on the App Store and Google Play Store – search for ‘Oxford University Press journals’ to see them all.

Please note that the Oxford Academic platform is fully responsive and is designed for optimal user experience across all devices and operating systems. All journals will continue to be updated on the Oxford Academic platform.

Please check this page regularly for updates (last updated 21 November 2017).

If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact our Customer Services team.

Getting Access

Q: I have a subscription through my society membership – how can I sign in to the app?

A: If you are entitled to access any journal in the app through your society membership, you can sign in to the app in two ways:

1 Whenever you tap to ‘Download’ an issue, you will be prompted to sign in if you do not already have access to it. Tap the link under ‘Society member’ to sign in via your society site. A new page (on the society site) will then display within the app, where you can enter your username and password to sign in. Once you have signed in, please wait for the page or any subsequent page on the society site to close, and you will have access to the app content (you may briefly see the journal homepage appear after you’ve successfully signed in, but you will return to the app soon after).

2 You can proactively sign in at any time from the ‘Accounts’ screen, accessed via the main menu. Again, tap the link under ‘Society member’ to sign in via your society site. Follow the same steps as described above.

You will remain signed in for 90 days, after which time the app will prompt you to sign in again to continue downloading new content. Previously downloaded content will remain available to you. You can choose to sign out at any point during the 90-day period by going to the ‘Accounts’ screen and tapping ‘Sign out of all accounts’.

Q: I am a personal subscriber – how can I sign in to the app?

A: If you have a subscription from Oxford University Press to any journal in the app, you can sign in to the app in two ways:

1 Whenever you tap to ‘Download’ an issue, you will be prompted to sign in if you do not already have access to it. Enter your username and password into the fields, and tap ‘Sign in’.

2 You can proactively sign in at any time from the ‘Accounts’ screen, accessed via the main menu. Enter your username and password into the fields, and tap ‘Sign in’.

Q: My institution has a subscription – how can I sign in to the app?

A: If your institution subscribes to any of the journals in the app, you may be able to gain access to content in the app by connecting to an appropriate institutional Wi-Fi network, and then using the app to download content.

You can check if you are successfully signed in by going to the ‘Accounts’ screen, accessed via the main menu, where the account(s) you are signed in to are listed.

You will remain signed in for 90 days each time you connect to the Wi-Fi network, enabling you to continue accessing content outside of your institution’s network; 90 days after last connecting, the app will prompt you to sign in again to continue downloading new content. Previously downloaded content will remain available to you. You can choose to sign out at any point during the 90-day period by going to the ‘Accounts’ screen and tapping ‘Sign out of all accounts’.

Please note that not all institutions with subscriptions offer access via their Wi-Fi network. For further details, speak to your institution’s librarian, or contact our Customer Services team using the details below.

Q: How do I check if I am signed in?

To check if you are signed in, go to the ‘Accounts’ screen, accessed via the main menu. The account(s) you are signed in to will be listed.

Q: The app says I am signed in, but I cannot download content. Why is that, and what should I do?

A: There are three possible reasons why the app might say you are signed in on the ‘Accounts’ screen, but you are unable to download content.

1 You need to be connected to the Internet to download content. The app should indicate if you do not have Internet access when you try to download content.

2 You may be signed in to an account that does not have a subscription for the journal you are trying to access.

3 The app continues to provide access to content for 90 days after you last signed in. Currently the app sometimes still displays an account after those 90 days, even though it is in fact no longer signed in with that account. This is a bug that we are in the process of fixing.

If the app shows that you are signed in, but you cannot download content, and you have already checked your Internet connection, then you should first try signing out and signing back in again: on the ‘Accounts’ screen, tap ‘Sign out of all accounts’, and then sign in again, and try to download content. If you still receive a message that you are not authorized to access the content, it is possible that you do not have a subscription to the content with the account you signed in to. Please contact our Customer Services team using the details below to check this.

Q: Why can’t I change the orientation of the app to read in landscape mode?

A: Currently the app only allows reading in portrait mode.
