1) About BrillOnline Books and Journals
What is BrillOnline Books and Journals?
BrillOnline Books and Journals is Brill's platform for both books and journals. It hosts all of Brill's e-books and also hosts all of the electronic journals published. New titles and articles are uploaded on a daily basis.
Is BrillOnline Books and Journals OpenURL compliant?
Yes, BrillOnline Books and Journals complies with the ANSI standard Z39.88. For more details about Federated Search, Link resolvers and OpenUrl see www.niso.org and www.uksg.org/kbart. (Please note that the references on BrillOnline Books and Journals, whether incoming or outgoing, are similarly OpenURL compliant).
How do I connect to my database to BrillOnline Books and Journals?
Go to the Administration page; under URLs you see:
Manage OpenURLs – Click here to set BrillOnline Books and Journals as a target and link it to a source such as abstracting and indexing databases. This linking is mediated by link resolvers, and BrillOnline Books and Journals supports both market link server systems and open-source link resolvers.
What metadata is offered?
In addition to such metadata as author, title, and publication data, which is found on a publication's homepage, BrillOnline Books and Journals offers MARC records for the e-book collections. All metadata is freely available.
Where can I find MARC records?
Go to the Administration page; under Subscriptions, you will see:
Download MARC records – Click to go to booksandjournals.brillonline.com/marc where you can download the MARC records per e-book collection.
What do the white and green symbols before titles mean?
These symbols are access icons.
The green icon means full access. The green icon with a white O in the middle means the title is published in Open Access and is fully accessible.
The white icon means you do not have access (payment required). You can purchase the e-book, chapter or article to gain access.
Please note that in some cases – on the journal homepage – the icon will be white, indicating "no access" while your institute has access to one or more volumes. The green icons – indicating full access – are on volume level. Access to the Brill journal content can be through different channels and access is given using different authentications. Therefore the access icons are on journal volume level and not on the journal home page.
How do I actually read my article / chapter / book?
You can read them from the screen, on the site itself. Clicking on the Read button opens the texts in a lightbox. Downloaded publications can be read in a browser (html) or in Adobe's Acrobat Reader (pdf). Please note: you will need to download and install the required Adobe Acrobat Reader software, before the title can successfully load in the lightbox. (Please download, or refer to your Technical Department for support)
2) Access to your Subscription(s) / Holding(s)
How do I access the platform?
BrillOnline Books and Journals supports IP recognition and access by username and password. In addition, access by Athens and Shibboleth is also supported.
I used to access my Brill journal subscription through IngentaConnect (IC). How can I access my subscriptions now?
Since last year IngentaConnect no longer hosts the Brill journal content. Brill now has its own platform, BrillOnline Books and Journals, where you have access to your holdings. For your convenience, your IP address(es) is recognized and you can log in with your old IngentaConnect username / password.
How can I access BrillOnline Books and Journals content?
Brill offers different E-Book Collections in 11 different subject areas. If your institute has purchased any of Brill's E-Book Collection you can access the content when you are logged in via your institute. More information about Brill's E-Book collections is available on brill.com/ebooks. Individual titles can also be purchased on BrillOnline Books and Journals.
If your institute subscribes to one of our journals or is part of a consortium with access to the Brill journals, login via your institute and you have access to the Brill journal content. If you are interested in a personal subscription, you can subscribe to either the print or e-version, more information can be found on brill.com.
What is 'Sign in via your institution'?
Click on Sign in via your institution to log in to BrillOnline Books and Journals via Athens or Shibboleth. You will need your institution's username and password to do so.
What is Brill's MyBook?
Brill's MyBook program enables users to purchase a paperback copy of books of their choosing, provided they have access to the e-book version. Libraries that purchase any Brill E-Book Collection automatically make this option available to students and scholars affiliated with that institution. The program is part of Brill's broader initiative to make its publications more accessible to the scholarly community. For more information and details, see brill.com/mybook.
Free access for individuals and how to activate access tokens
Individuals are eligible for free access to selected Brill journals with use of an access token. You may find these tokens on a journal's web page at brill.com, on facebook, in newsletters and/or in promotional material. I have been given a token with a discount for a book. How do I use it?
Navigate to the book in question. Click on 'buy' and proceed to checkout. Fill out your billing address and go to the payments page. Here you will see a field where you can enter your token code. Press the update button afterwards and you will see that the discount has been processed. A presentation for activating a token is available. Please note that tokens are for individual users:
I purchased a book/chapter/article but I cannot access it.
Please look for the e-mail receipt. Did you receive it? Check the My account page: is the item listed under Track orders? If not, the transaction will have almost certainly not taken place.
When using EZProxy to access BrillOnline Books and Journals it can take a long time to load an article or page. What can I do?
This is probably due to the version of EZProxy you are currently using. Please note that Brill’s platform is best supported using an EZProxy version 5.6 or higher.

3) Subscriber Services
How do I register and activate my account?
If you are an active customer an account will be created for you and by activating the account you will be given access to your account details and the institutional administrator section of BrillOnline Books and Journals. For more details and help view our presentation:

How do I manage my institution's details?
Go to the Administration page; under Profile management you see:
Update institutional profile – Click here to edit address and contact details, as well as the administrator's username and password.
Manage institutional logo – Click here to upload your institute's logo. It will appear in the top right of every page on BrillOnline Books and Journals.

How do I manage my institution's access details?
Go to the Administration page; under Authentication you see:
Manage authentication details – Click here to manage your institution's IP range, to add usernames and passwords for the benefit of users outside of your IP range (up to a maximum of 5), and to set up access via Shibboleth.
Can I get an overview of my institution's holdings?
Yes. Go to the Administration page; under Subscriptions, you will see:
Current subscriptions – Click here for a complete overview of publications your institute has access to.
Why should I register?
While you may have access to publications through your institution, you are invited to register for a personal account. Registered users can use personal tools, as well as purchasing access to publications.

How do I know which products I have access to?
If you are an individual customer, click on 'View current content' in 'My account'. Here you can also manage your personal data.
If you are a librarian, click 'Current subscriptions' under 'Administration'.
However, at the moment this page is not working. We are working on this to get this fixed as soon as possible.
4) Usage Statistics
What usage reports are offered?
BrillOnline Books and Journals is COUNTER compliant and offers COUNTER 4 statistics. Brill Online Books and Journals also supports SUSHI. For more information about COUNTER and/or SUSHI visit www.niso.org, www.projectcounter.org, and www.uksg.org/kbart.
How do I generate usage statistics?
Go to the Administration page; under Statistics you see:

How do I generate SUSHI reports?
SUSHI reports are available through a web service request. To access this page you will need a Requestor ID and Customer ID which can be generated from the site. There are three report types:
Journal Report 1 - Number of Successful full-text Article Requests by Month and Journal
Consortium Report 1 - Number of Successful Title Requests by Month and Title
Consortium Report 2 - Number of successful full-text journal article or book chapter requests by month
How do I browse and search
For browsing, use the navigation bar, the site menu or the subjects. For searching, use the Search field at the top of the page. You may also use Advanced Search, allowing you to specify additional requirements. Use filters, such as product type, publication year, or imprint to narrow down your search results.
What is preview?
A glimpse of the actual article / chapter / book. The preview button opens a lightbox showing a few pages of the publication. It allows you to decide whether the publication suits your needs.
How do I save my search results?
Use the Tools menu; the option Save Search appears on the page listing your search results.
How do I view my Search History?
You can click on Search History in My Account. You can click on Saved Searches in My Account.
6) Personal Tools
How do I use the Twitter button and other social icons?
Simply click on the icon to share a link. Social icons at present include Facebook, Twitter, Google (Bookmark), Citeulike, Connotea, Bibsonomy, Digg, Delicious, and LinkedIn.
What are the personal tools?
BrillOnline Books and Journals offers the following contextual tools:
- Add to favorites – these are your personal favorites on BrillOnline Books and Journals
- Printable version – click here print this page
- Email this page – email the link to the page
- Create email alert – click here to set up an publication alert (see below)
- Get permissions – takes you to the CopyRights Centre
- Recommend to your library – sends an email to your librarian
- Export citations – email or download the references in Bibtext, Endnote, plain text or Refworks format
- Email search results – email the search results
- Save search – saves your search results; see the My Account page for an overview of saved searches
- Create search alert – click here to set up a search alert (see below)
How do I add a title to My Favorites?
Using the Tools menu, click on Add to favorites. Click on My Favorites on the My Account page to see all of your Favorites, or to delete a Favorite.
What alerts can I set up?
BrillOnline Books and Journals supports 4 kinds of alerts: search, publication, site and subject alerts. Set them up using the My Account page. Click here for a step-by-step guide on how to set up a Table of Contents alert for a journal:
How do I reference Brill's electronic books and journals in my own publications?
All e-books have an E-ISBN and a DOI, and all chapters a DOI, which can be cited as references when needed. Similarly, all journals have an E-ISSN, and all articles have a DOI. In addition, the pdf files still include references to page numbers.
7) Purchasing Books, Book Chapters, and Journal Articles
What can I purchase on BrillOnline Books and Journals?
- Book chapter (electronic): You can go to the chapter and you will see a Buy button. Click it to add the item to your shopping cart. You can pay for the item via the secure payment pages.
- Journal articles (electronic): You can go to the article and you will see a Buy button. Click it to add the item to your shopping cart. You can pay for the item via the secure payment pages.
- Journals (electronic): Subscriptions to Brill's electronic journals are handled off-site; please refer to our Sales Support for more information ([email protected] for Canada and the Americas and [email protected] for the rest of the world) or order directly via Turpin, our Distributing Centre in the UK, [email protected].
- E-book Collections (electronic): Outright purchases of e-book collections are handled off-site; please refer to our Sales Support for more information: [email protected] for Canada and the Americas and [email protected] for the rest of the world.
- E-books (electronic) using Brill E-Book Select: Brill’s pick and choose model is only available for library administrators on BrillOnline Books and Journals. Go to the e-book you wish to order and click on the Add to Select order button. Review and submit your order on the Brill E-Book Select order page. Your order will be managed and invoiced by the Brill Sales team
- Books and Journals (print): For information about Brill's books and journals, for (printed) catalogues, and for ordering print editions, please visit brill.com. You can also directly order via Turpin, our Distributing Centre in the UK, [email protected].
How do I buy a book / chapter / article?
If you do not have access to a title, you will see a white access icon meaning 'No access (Payment required)'. You will also see a Buy button. Click it to add the item to your shopping cart. You can pay for the item via the secure payment pages. Everybody affiliated to an institute which has purchased one of Brill’s E-Book Collections, is offered the MyBook option. See ‘What is Brill’s MyBook’ under 2, for more information.
How do I pay?
You can pay for the items in your shopping cart via the secure payment pages. BrillOnline Books and Journals supports payment by credit card only. Accepted credit cards are Visa and MasterCard.
I have to log in or register when I want to purchase something. Why is that?
To purchase books, articles or chapters you have to be logged in as a registered user. Only registered users can buy articles, chapters, or books. If you go to your shopping cart you will be prompted to register, or to log in if already registered. If you were asked to log in after clicking 'buy' and did so, you will be transferred back to the original book page to restart buying.
What do I get when I buy an item?
You get perpetual access to your purchase. You are also able to download your purchase.
How do I know my credit card number is secure on your site?
Access to this site is made secure by the use of a digitally signed secure certificate and SSL encryption. You can check that our certificate is valid by clicking on the Network Solutions logo, featured at the bottom of the Shopping Cart and Checkout pages.
Will I receive an order confirmation?
You will be sent an e-mail to confirm your order and will receive an additional e-mail detailing your credit card transaction.
I did not receive an order confirmation : what should I do?
Please check your personal account to see if your e-mail address is (still) correct.
I have purchased the wrong article. What do I do?
Electronic goods cannot be returned. Nor are refunds possible. Please see Brill's Terms and Conditions for full details.
Do I have the right to return Brill's electronic books and journals?
Electronic goods cannot be returned. Nor are refunds possible. Please see Brill's Terms and Conditions for full details.
What does '+ taxes if applicable' mean?
In general, tax or VAT of 21% will be added for customers from the European Union countries. In case the customer has a VAT number, VAT reverse charge is in accordance to article 196 of EU VAT Directive 2006/112.
What currency can I use to buy?
Prices are shown either in Euro (for customers in Europe), or in US Dollars (for all customers outside Europa).
Can I share my purchased items with other people?
For individual users multi-user licenses are not available at BrillOnline Books and Journals.

Brill E-Book Select
How do I add e-books to a Brill E-Book Select order?
When browsing e-books as an administrator, you will notice that an Add to E-Book order button appears for e-books which you have not yet purchased access to. How many titles can I add to a Brill E-Book Select order?
There is no limit to the number of titles you can add to Brill E-Book Select.
How can I manage and submit my order?
You can manage and submit your order by going to the E-Book Select overview page. You can access this overview by clicking on the hyperlinked text “Select Order”, which will be displayed below the Buy button on all titles that have been added to Brill E-Book Select. Alternatively, you can access this overview from the Administration menu, which you find in the menu bar on the right hand side of the page. Click on Administration then E-Book Select Orders.
Can I remove titles that I have added to a Brill E-Book Select order?
You can delete titles before submitting your order by unticking the box for that title, in the Brill E-Book Select order overview page. Untick the box for a title you wish to remove and click on Update Order.
How will I be charged for my Brill E-book order?
The Brill Sales team will process the order and send an invoice to your account administrator email address.
How do I get MARC records for the e-books?
The Brill Sales team will generate MARC records and send them in a separate email to your account administrator email address.
